Assembling the missing section on Mountain View Corridor between 2100 North in Lehi and Porter Rockwell Boulevard near the border between Utah and Salt Lake counties is the first step for the Utah Department of Transportation in creating an alternate route for commuters in the northwest part of Utah County.

Beginning Wednesday, construction will began on the project. It will be the first of many Mountain View Corridor freeway segments to be constructed.

UDOT officials say the project has been in the works for nearly a decade. It’s part of a larger goal to create a fully functioning freeway stretching from Interstate 80 in Salt Lake County to state Route 73 in Utah County.

The new freeway will have two travel lanes in each direction and a 12-foot-wide multiuse trail with seven grade-separated crossings. Construction is expected to last through early 2026, according to a press release.

The highway aims to create easier access to Salt Lake County from northwest Utah County.

“This is going to be a great thing for those who live in Eagle Mountain and Cedar Valley and Saratoga Springs,” UDOT Communications Manager Wyatt Woolley told the Daily Herald. “They’ll have a north and south option on the west side without having to go all the way over to I-15 if they’re headed up to Salt Lake County.”

Due to growth in Utah County, some work already has been completed to alleviate traffic congestion on Redwood Road along Utah Lake in Saratoga Springs.

The Utah Transportation Commission allocated $750 million toward building transportation projects to help improve traffic flow, including the Mountain View Corridor project.

Madison Dlugas lives in Saratoga Springs and travels on Mountain View Corridor to work in the Daybreak/South Jordan area, although at one point she would use Bangerter Highway to avoid traffic congestion on her way to work. But construction there has shifted her travels back to taking Mountain View.

Currently, there’s no straight path on the corridor from 2100 North in Lehi and Saratoga Springs into Salt Lake County. A driver would need to take Redwood Road to Porter Rockwell Boulevard to get back on Mountain View, a route that adds more time to Dlugas’ commute.

“If I can avoid driving on Redwood Road and stay traveling on Mountain View once the two Mountain View highways are connected, I would save so much time and stress,” she told the Daily Herald.

To get the project done, drivers will see impacts during construction. Southbound Mountain View traffic will shift to a temporary road for drivers traveling west of Redwood Road toward Saratoga Springs. The shift will keep traffic moving while crews construct the corridor freeway ramps, according to a UDOT press release.

Transportation officials listed a schedule of what drivers can expect during construction:

  • 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday, with weekend and night work as needed.
  • Trucks entering and exiting the work zone.
  • Increased noise, dust and vibrations.
  • Traffic shifts, lane closures and detours as needed.

“It shouldn’t be too bad, just drive safe in the work zone,” Woolley said. “We want people to be careful and drive at the appropriate speeds through the work zones and watch out for each other.”
