Christmas is supposed to be a jolly time of the year, and it’s an added bonus when a child’s birthday also falls within the month of December.
Unfortunately for Emily and Roberto and their family, the season this year is seemingly more grim than they’d like.
The couple have two children, a 6-year-old boy and a girl, age 4.
Their son recently was diagnosed with autism, and if that discovery wasn’t enough, the family is now being faced with medical expenses just ahead of Christmas.
“We received medical expenses and they are very high,” Emily said. “We have to pay them in December. … The gifts would make us very happy.”
One of the children also has a birthday they are celebrating this month.
In the midst of navigating hospital bills and other living expenses while making their finances stretch as far as possible, buying gifts this year has taken a backseat.
For decades, the United Way of Utah County’s Sub for Santa program has been a lifeline for families who have fallen on hard times. As more families reportedly are asking for assistance this year, the organization remains committed to its efforts of making miracles happen by connecting applicants with donors who help put presents under the tree on Christmas morning.
Emily and Roberto say their two children have various apparel needs including winter coats, pants, church wear, T-shirts and dresses for their daughter.
Their kids also are hoping for other gift ideas including Legos, Barbie dolls, a paint set, kids makeup and anything that involves NASA.
Their son is really into science and enjoys books about the solar system, planets and space. Their daughter is hoping for books as well, such as “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” or anything animal related.
“The gifts … will make them very very happy,” Emily said.
United Way of Utah County invites all to get involved this holiday season. If you would like to be part of this annual initiative and help bring the Christmas spirit to those in need, visit subforsanta.org.
