The crew left with the Utah County Fire Department’s Engine 12 to the Cleveland National Forest in Southern California on Monday.
The tour will last up to 14 days, putting the crew “away from their family and friends for the holidays,” the sheriff’s office said.
Sgt. Ray Ormond of the Utah County Sheriff’s Office told the Daily Herald the crew will learn the details of their assignment when they arrive.
The Cleveland National Forest encompasses 720 square miles of mountain terrain in Orange, Riverside and San Diego counties.
The area recently was impacted by a fire that was ignited by a public works crew using heavy machinery to move boulders on Sept. 9. The fire was active for 26 days and burned 23,526 acres across Orange and Riverside counties.
