A man accused of brandishing a gun during a road rage incident in Eagle Mountain last week was cited Monday, and could face a firearm charge the Utah County Sheriff’s Office said.

Authorities identified the suspect as 22-year-old Ariel Rangel Perez of Eagle Mountain.

They said a resident provided a tip that helped officials locate the suspect.

According to a press release, around 6:30 a.m. Thursday, deputies responded to reports of an incident in which one driver allegedly pointed a gun at another driver.

The alleged victim provided authorities with a license plate number of the suspect’s vehicle, though deputies weren’t able to locate him at the address listed on his registration.

However, a witness reported she saw what she believed was the suspect’s car that same evening near the city center area of Eagle Mountain, the press release stated.

Monday morning, a deputy who was monitoring traffic on Pony Express Parkway spotted the same vehicle described by both the alleged victim and witness who provided the information.

After discovering a match on the vehicle and license plate, the deputy pulled the car over with Rangel Perez behind the wheel.

“He admitted that he’d been involved in the road rage incident and admitted he brandished the handgun during that incident,” the press release said.

Authorities also reportedly found that Rangel Perez was driving on a suspended license with no car insurance and that the vehicle’s registration was expired and previously had been revoked, according to the release.

Rangel Perez was given a citation for the vehicular violations and his car was impounded.

The citation comes on the same day that a new Utah law imposing harsher punishments for those accused of inciting violent acts during a road rage incident takes effect.

The Utah County Sheriff’s Office is turning the case over to the county prosecutor’s office, recommending that Rangel Perez be charged with one class A misdemeanor count of threatening with a dangerous weapon during a fight.
