- Fire damage is visible at a Pleasant Grove home after an early morning fire reportedly killed 2 people and their pets Wednesday, July 17, 2024.
An early morning house fire in Pleasant Grove has left a mother, her son and their two pets dead, according to news reports.
Pleasant Grove Fire Chief Andrew Engemann told ABC4 that crews responded to the burning home near 600 East and 100 North around 2 a.m. Wednesday. They arrived to smoke and flames reportedly coming from the back of the home, the outlet reported.
According to KUTV, firefighters were able to diminish the blaze, and as first responders searched the home for occupants, they discovered an elderly woman who appeared to be suffering from smoke inhalation. CPR was performed on her and she was taken to a hospital where authorities say she later died, the news station reported.
Responding agencies also found a disabled man, also suffering from smoke inhalation. Life-saving measures were performed but he died at the scene, officials told KUTV.
Authorities later confirmed the woman, who was said to be in her 80s, and the male victim, possibly in his 50s, were mother and son.
The Daily Herald was unable to independently confirm the identities of the victims, but a woman who lives in the Pleasant Grove neighborhood told KSL TV they witnessed the early morning flames coming from the home of her neighbor Rosemary Pendley, who lived in the home with her son Jesse.
A pet dog and cat also died as a result of the fire, KSL TV reported.
The cause of the fire is currently being investigated by the Utah Fire Marshal, but Engemann told KUTV it may have been caused by an electrical issue in the back of the home.
Pleasant Grove fire officials did not immediately respond to the Daily Herald’s multiple attempts to gather additional information.
