Edgemont Elementary School in northeast Provo moved to remote learning Monday, Oct. 11, 2021, after several students tested positive for COVID-19.

The principal and assistant principal of Edgemont Elementary School in Provo have been reinstated after both employees were placed on paid administrative leave last month for unspecified reasons.

In a statement to the Daily Herald on Monday, Provo School District said an investigation into “reported concerns” regarding Principal Harmony Kartchner and Assistant Principal Desiree Olsen had been completed and no disciplinary action was warranted. The district did not specify what the reported concerns were.

“We appreciate the community and school personnel’s patience as we ensured a thorough and fair process for all parties involved,” Caleb Price, Provo City School District director of communications, said in an email statement. “We know this process felt long and that it took a toll on our students, staff, and community. We are grateful for the time and attention paid to this matter so we could ensure the evidence on both sides was evaluated thoroughly and appropriately before interpreting the findings and determining an outcome.”

The district’s statement acknowledged that questions still remain but said it is a “human resources issue” and the district cannot comment further with specifics on the complaints, evidence or investigation findings.

“We know this may be frustrating, but we hope you will understand our position as we protect all who were involved in this process,” the district said.

Both Kartchner and Olsen returned to their positions Monday morning. Karen Brock, the district’s director of professional development, was operating as interim principal will they were on leave.

“Edgemont Elementary is a top performing school in our community and in Utah,” Provo City School District said. “We look forward to the continued success of the students and school under the leadership of Principal Kartchner and Assistant Principal Olsen.”

Edgemont Elementary serves students in a section of northeast Provo near the Provo Canyon.
