Alleged Pleasant Grove vehicle arson prompts SWAT response; man in custody
A man is in custody for allegedly setting a vehicle on fire overnight and prompting an early morning SWAT response in Pleasant Grove.
Early Thursday morning, police responded to reports of a car fire near Turley Avenue and Smith Lane in Pleasant Grove. The initial investigation of the charred vehicle determined it was arson, the Pleasant Grove Police Department said. Surveillance video helped lead authorities to a suspect.
Pleasant Grove police say the suspect, who officials later identified as Skyler Shumway, barricaded himself inside of a residence and refused to come out.
Shumway surrendered after Utah County SWAT officers fired tear gas into the home.
The suspect is known to have mental health problems and was reported to have been acting erratically over the past few days, a post on Pleasant Grove Police Department’s Facebook page claims.
Shumway was booked into the Utah County Jail on suspicion of arson. Authorities say no one was harmed during the incident.
