The Lehi Ice Rink is making a return for its second year, just in time for the holiday season.

According to Lehi officials, skaters will notice more space on the rink this season.

“Last year, the rink measured 100 feet by 50 feet. This year, it has been expanded to 100 feet by 85 feet — half the size of a standard NHL rink,” said Jessica West, Lehi City’s recreation program manager.

The change means the rink has grown from 5,000 square feet to 8,500 square feet.

The city tried out the new activity last winter. The outdoor ice skating rink was open from the end of last November through most of last January.

Officials initially said they want the rink to become a yearly tradition for people in Lehi and surrounding communities, but they also wanted to gauge the response after the first year.

The chilly attraction turned out to be a hit, attracting dozens of people each night it was open.

“Last year, attendance exceeded our expectations, and the response was overwhelmingly positive,” West told the Daily Herald. “We received valuable feedback, which we have incorporated into this year’s plans to enhance the experience.”

Many of the same concessions will remain this year, with the addition of soda, doughnuts, hot chocolate and hand warmers.

Skating and speed skating classes will still be offered, as well as learning opportunities for aspiring hockey players.

“This year, we are introducing additional programs, including Learn to Skate Hockey (introductory hockey) and Advanced Skating Skills. Additionally, we are installing hockey boards and netting, allowing the rink to be rented for hockey practices,” West said.

If skating on an ice rink sounds intimidating, West encourages people of all skill levels to try some of the offered programs.

“Our rink is a welcoming space for beginners, with classes and staff ready to help you get comfortable on the ice,” she said. “Whether you’re looking for a new way to stay active, enjoy time with family or try something outside your comfort zone, we encourage you to come give it a try. You might discover a new hobby — and have a great time doing it!”

The ice rink is located at the Lehi Sports Complex, 2000 W. 700 South, on the baseball diamond.

Lehi’s outdoor ice rink opens Saturday and runs through Jan. 18, 2025.

Hours are 5:30-9:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 10 p.m. Saturdays.

The ice rink will close on Sundays, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
