Man shot and killed by police after attacking officer, Springville police say

A man was shot and killed by police Saturday night after allegedly stabbing an officer with a knife.

The officer was treated for the wound but will recover, according to a Springville Police Department news release.

Officers were dispatched to a residence at 180 S. 300 West in Springville at 10:25 p.m. after neighbors reported a woman screaming and crying, police said.

Police made contact with the woman and were investigating the incident when a man abruptly exited the residence and reportedly attacked an officer with a large knife. Officers drew their weapons in response and fired to defend themselves, shooting the man, per the release.

Officers offered medical aid until medical responders arrived. The man was taken to Utah Valley Hospital but did not survive, police said.

The man’s name is not being released at this time.

The attacked officer was reportedly taken to the hospital, treated for the non-life-threatening injury and released.

The Utah County Metro Officer Involved Critical Incident team is investigating the incident.
