The committee says they combed through more than 1,100 name ideas sent in by local citizens.
“In February, the committee invited residents to participate in the naming process through an open survey. More than 1,100 residents from the six cities submitted names, reflecting the community’s enthusiasm and pride in shaping the future of local education,” a statement from the committee reads.
The aforementioned six cities along with eight other Utah County municipalities are part of a reconfiguration to split the current Alpine School District three ways.
Last November, residents in Alpine, American Fork, Cedar Hills, Draper (Utah County portion), Highland and Lehi, as well as Saratoga Springs and Eagle Mountain, voted in favor of creating separate school districts.
Lindon, Pleasant Grove, Orem and Vineyard will also form a new district — despite voters in those cities not being presented with the question on their general election ballot.
“The creation of a new school district has sparked important conversations about improving local representation, promoting educational equity, and better serving the diverse needs of families and schools in the community,” the committee said in its statement.
The interlocal groups were required to select temporary district names for aspiring new school board members to run under.
The Aspen Peaks name replaces the Central School District branding, which was the interlocal committee used during the election and last year’s feasibility study.
Earlier this year, committees representing schools in the northwest portion of Utah County selected a temporary district name of Lake Mountain, while in the south, Timpanogos was chosen.
Each district’s future school board will ultimately select the respective final names.
The next step in the process will be the election of seven board members to represent the new districts.
Those interested in running for one of the seats must file their declaration of candidacy in person at the Utah County Clerk’s Office between June 2-6.
Voters will elect the new boards Nov. 4 and winners will be seated within the following month.
Newly formed districts will be operational beginning with the 2027-28 school year.
