A portion of American Fork Canyon was closed Monday after a wildfire sparked near Tibble Fork Reservoir, forcing evacuations of the area.
What’s being called the Mill Canyon Fire, which burned about a quarter-acre on the east side of the reservoir, was initially located and reported to local and federal authorities just after 6 a.m. Monday, according to the U.S. Forest Service’s Pleasant Grove Ranger District.
Initial reports indicated that the fire was moving fast, the agency said in a social media post Monday afternoon, resulting in immediate evacuations of the Granite Flat campground, Tibble Fork summer home area and areas near Tibble Fork Reservoir.
Around 7:30 a.m. Monday, the Utah Department of Transportation announced the closure of state Route 144 at the Alpine Loop junction due to a fire that was affecting the road, leaving no access to Tibble Fork Reservoir.
“With support from law enforcement, individuals recreating in the area were evacuated as a safety precaution,” the agency said.
The fire was contained by 10 a.m., and local fire crews that responded were released, but the sheriff’s office said access to Tibble Fork Reservoir along S.R. 144 could remain closed for the rest of the day as crews mop up hot spots, KSL TV reported.
As of 3 p.m. Monday, UDOT and the Utah Highway Patrol still had the closure in place at the S.R. 144 and S.R. 92 intersection. However, S.R. 92 through Alpine Loop remained open for traffic.
“This was an incredible team effort from all sides of the Public Safety family,” the Utah County Sheriff’s Office said in a social media post Monday afternoon. “As Fire Crews rushed to extinguish the blaze from the air and ground, Law Enforcement quickly evacuated the area of campers and hikers.”
As of Monday afternoon, the cause of the fire was under investigation.
