The altercation happened around 11:15 a.m. in the area of 7800 South and Redwood Road. According to Sgt. Andrew Hercules with the West Jordan Police Department, task force officers from Utah County were conducting an investigation in the area when the incident occurred.
“During their attempts at apprehension, there was an altercation between the Task Force officers and the subject that they were attempting to apprehend, and shots were fired by members of that task force,” Hercules told reporters during a briefing Wednesday afternoon.
The Utah County Sheriff’s Office alleges the task force was investigating the distribution of illegal drugs that it says had allegedly been affecting both Utah and Salt Lake counties.
“The Utah County Major Crimes task force attempted a traffic stop of a suspect, who was part of the previously mentioned investigation, which resulted in an officer-involved shooting,” Sgt. Ray Ormond said in a media release late Wednesday afternoon.
The unidentified person who officers were looking into was taken to a hospital for treatment but was said to be in stable condition. One officer from the Utah County agency was evaluated and treated by medical teams and released at the scene, according to Hercules.
Exact details about what led up to the altercation were not provided. It also wasn’t made clear if the suspect fired shots at officers.
Although Wednesday’s incident stemmed from a Utah County investigation, Hercules said the West Valley City Officer-Involved Critical Incident Team will take the lead on looking into the shooting.
The Utah County Sheriff’s Office said the case remains active and its investigation is ongoing.
No further information was immediately provided Wednesday afternoon.
