A Cedar Hills man has been convicted by a federal jury for recording himself sexually abusing a minor, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Utah announced in a media release on Wednesday.
Brent Richard Johnson, 51, was convicted Wednesday after the jury returned a guilty verdict on the case.
According to court documents obtained by the Daily Herald, in January 2024, a girl reported to police that a hidden camera inside of a bathroom at a home in Cedar Hills was recording her.
Shortly after that, a search warrant was conducted at the home where police seized a computer that contained images from a backup of Johnson’s iPhone, showing him sexually abusing a 9-year-old girl while she was sleeping. The images were recorded approximately between August and November 2013, according to a probable cause statement.
“During the search, law enforcement also found a USB charging box that was disguised as a camera in a bathroom,” according to the release.
Johnson was taken into custody and was charged by indictment on Nov. 20, 2024, with production of child pornography and possession of child pornography, the release states.
The agency went on to say that the case was brought before investigators as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
The case is being investigated collaboratively by the American Fork Police Department, the Utah County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations.
Johnson is scheduled for a sentencing hearing at the Orrin G. Hatch United States District Courthouse in downtown Salt Lake City in February.
