A Spanish Fork man was arrested Wednesday after police said he struck and killed a motorcycle driver with his truck.

Rafael Alvis, 55, was booked into the Utah County Jail and is being investigated for automobile homicide and driving under the influence.

Spanish Fork police first reported Wednesday that the collision occurred around 3:36 p.m. at the 600 East and 300 South intersection. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Our hearts go out to this man’s family and loved ones during this tragic time,” said Police Chief Matt Johnson.

According to a court affidavit, Alvis was driving a 1994 Chevy truck and told police he was traveling east to west and thought he had a green light, and struck the motorcycle in the intersection.

In the affidavit, an officer said he detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on Alvis and added that a witness reportedly saw him on his phone while approaching the intersection.

Police said a warrant was obtained to test Alvis’ blood, breath and urine, and results were pending. Additional tests were also conducted and a drug recognition expert concluded Alvis was believed to be under the influence, according to the affidavit.

Alvis is being held without bail.
