Provo police are asking for the public’s help to identify suspects after Quail Orchard Park appeared to be the target of arson Thursday morning for the second time within the last month.

Provo police and firefighters were dispatched to a fire at Quail Orchard park at 3:08 a.m. Thursday and found extensive damage on the playground area, according to a release.

Provo Parks and Recreation estimated there to be $122,000 in damage.

“It is disappointing to see this unnecessary damage undermine the hard work, planning, and community investment that goes into our parks and facilities,” said Doug Robins, Provo Parks and Recreation director, in the release. “Damage to our community amenities makes it harder to deliver nice things for our citizens.”

Vandalism has been a frequent occurrence at the $5.5 million, 7-acre park since it opened in 2023, the city said. An arson incident in June caused $66,000 in repairs, and in 2024 fireworks damaged the playground’s shade sails with a replacement cost of $8,000.

The most recent incident damaged the playground structure, slide tarp, overhang and soft surface, the city said. The damage will impact the park’s budget and delay improvement in the community, said Robins.

“‘Can we have nice things?’ is a fair question,” said Robins. “The answer is yes, but only if we all work together to respect and care for the spaces and amenities that serve our community. When we do, the benefits are shared by everyone.”

Provo police are asking those with information on either of the arson events to call 801-852-6210.

Starting at $4.32/week.
