Lehi High School went into a precautionary lockdown for a short time Thursday afternoon after someone reported seeing a gun on campus grounds.

The Lehi Police Department said a parking lot attendant at “a local high school” saw a handgun inside a parked vehicle in the parking lot of the campus just after noon.

Police said when the attendant returned a short time later, the firearm reportedly was no longer visible.

“Surveillance footage showed a juvenile entering the school, then later leaving the building and campus with other juveniles,” said Jeanteil Livingston, spokesperson for Lehi City, in an email.

The school was locked down and students remained in their classrooms while officers canvassed the building to ensure that the handgun had not been brought into the school, police said.

Officers were able to locate the vehicle and gun but had not taken a suspect into custody as of Thursday afternoon, according to Livingston.

“A search of the vehicle revealed the gun that we believe was originally observed, with a loaded magazine, as well as a second loaded, chambered handgun. Both handguns were seized and criminal charges will be screened with the Utah County Attorney’s Office,” Lehi police said in a statement on social media.

Parents of students at Lehi High School took to social media voicing their concerns after receiving an email from the school that a lockdown had been initiated.

One mom said she got a text from her son about the incident a short time before receiving that email from the school.

“Scary, scary,” said a mom identified only as Cindy, as she described her feelings upon learning what was unfolding at her son’s school.

Officers determined there was no ongoing threat to the school or public safety, and the lockdown was lifted shortly before 2 p.m.

But out of precaution, students were released early.

Uniformed officers were said to have remained stationed at the school and in the area until the normal school release time to ensure continued safety.

“These events are never easy and can be highly emotional for students, faculty, and family members. We are committed to doing what we can to help ensure the safety of the students, faculty, and visitors to the schools in our community,” Lehi police added.
