Utah House Majority Leader Jefferson Moss, R-Saratoga Springs, will step down from the Utah Legislature as he prepares for a new role as the next executive director of the Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity, or GOEO, a statewide initiative that oversees statewide efforts to promote business development, innovation and economic strategy.

Moss represents Saratoga Springs and a portion of Lehi in House District 51, a role he’s held since 2017.

He previously held positions on the Utah State Board of Education and in local government, including the Saratoga Springs City Council and Planning Commission.

Since taking office, Moss has been a passionate advocate for public education, energy, government efficiency and economic development. He has served in House majority leadership since 2019, including as Executive Appropriations Committee vice chair, House majority whip and House majority leader.

“It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve the people of House District 51 and the state of Utah,” Moss said in a Friday morning press release regarding the announcement. “I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve accomplished together to strengthen our economy, invest in education, and expand opportunity for Utah families.

Moss was appointed to the new role by Gov. Spencer Cox, who highlighted his achievements and qualifications.

“Jefferson Moss brings a rare combination of public service, private sector experience, and a deep understanding of innovation and education,” Cox said in the release. “He’s been a driving force behind many of Utah’s most forward-thinking initiatives, and I’m confident he’ll lead the Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity with the same vision, energy, and commitment to our state’s future that have defined his career.”

Moss said he looks forward to continuing his work in helping to lead Utah’s economic future in a new capacity.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue serving the people of Utah in this new capacity and help advance the Governor’s vision for economic opportunity across the state,” Moss said.

With the resignation, his legislative responsibilities will end on May 30. From there, Moss will begin acting as interim executive director of GOEO on June 2 and will serve in that interim capacity until his confirmation by the Utah Senate, according to the release.

“Rep. Moss has led the House with integrity, vision, and a genuine commitment to public service,” said the House Majority Leadership Team. “His ability to inspire trust, foster innovation, and champion meaningful policy has elevated our work and benefited communities across Utah. We are grateful for his leadership and friendship, and we wish him continued success as he steps into this important new role.”

The House Majority Caucus will hold a special leadership election in the coming weeks.
