On May 5 at around 11:30 p.m., members of the Utah County Major Crimes Task Force were serving a search warrant at a residence in the area of 400 North and 800 East, as part of a weekslong investigation into a man they reportedly suspected of drug distribution, the Utah County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release Monday.
Police say the man, Alejandro Demery, was seen leaving his Orem residence “and subsequently arrested and booked into the Utah County Jail” hours prior to the shooting.
Demery was booked on suspicion of two felony counts of possession with intent to distribute. Police allegedly discovered approximately 150 fentanyl pills, 11.8 grams of methamphetamine and a THC cartridge in Demery’s possession, the sheriff’s office release states.
Shortly after his arrest, the Utah County Major Crimes Task Force served the search warrant at the residence.
“As the Task Force members entered the home, they were announcing that they were Law Enforcement and serving a search warrant,” the sheriff’s office said in the release.
At some point during the visit, members of the task force encountered a man who police said “was not complying with the orders of the Law Enforcement officials,” the release reads.
During the confrontation, shots were fired by officers and a loaded handgun reportedly was recovered from the floor next to the man who had been shot, police said.
According to the release, officers rendered aid and called for an ambulance for the man — whose identity was not provided — but he later died.
It’s unclear what, if any, connection he may have shared with Demery.
The Officer Involved Critical Incident Team is handling the investigation, which the sheriff’s office said was ongoing as of Monday.
