A man suspected of driving under the influence slid off a hill and into a Lehi family’s backyard, according to police.
Lehi City spokesperson Jeanteil Livingston said police received a report Sunday morning around 8:45 of a single-car accident.
A 35-year-old man who has not been identified was allegedly driving north on 300 West when he supposedly lost control of his vehicle “due to the rain and to being impaired,” she said.
This allegedly led to his car going over an embankment and landing in someone’s yard, police said.
A tow truck was called and pulled the vehicle out of the backyard.
No one was injured, but the driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. Another man in the car with him during the time of the crash was not taken into custody, according to Livingston.
Because the result of this incident could have been worse, community members are raising safety concerns.
This particular section of 300 West sits on top of a steep embankment where the portion of a fence or guard rail has broken off. The backyards of several homes sit beneath it.
On the Lehi City Chat Facebook page, residents asked why a guardrail has not been installed.
“Just a few more yards and that car could have hit kids playing on a trampoline,” Sara Cohn wrote on a post. “Something needs to be done.”
“I have always been freaked out about someone driving off that drop onto someone’s house and think of it every time I drive on 300 West,” wrote Audrey Miller, another resident, commenting on the post.
Antoine Few, the Lehi resident whose backyard the car slid off into, told Fox 13 that it’s not the first time something like this has happened.
Lehi City also chimed in on the post, saying it’s previously considered installing guardrails at the location but faced challenges due to a shallow underground storm drain in the area, limiting the ability to install a conventional guardrail system.
However, the city added that its streets department plans to revisit the site to explore a feasible solution to the issue.
