The Utah County Sheriff’s Office said first responders were called around 7:30 p.m. to a home where the boy reportedly lost consciousness in a hot tub.
“It’s estimated the child was only in the hot tub for less than five minutes. An off-duty nurse administered CPR until the Unified Fire Authority and our deputies arrived,” Sgt. Ray Ormond of the Utah County Sheriff’s Office told the Daily Herald. “The child was transported to Primary Children’s Hospital, and at last update, the child is responding to people and doctors have a very positive outlook on his recovery.”
According to a a GoFundMe crowdfunding campaign created by the boy’s teacher to help his family cover medical expenses which identified him as Jason Thorpe, he was placed in the Intensive Care Unit and as of Sunday evening was slowly making progress.
Thorpe has just graduated from sixth grade and was celebrating the end of the school year with some friends when the accident happened, according to the fundraiser.
“On what was supposed to be the first joyful day of summer, Jason was found unconscious in a hot tub at a friend’s house. His sudden accident has left his family and community in shock, rallying together to support him in this critical time,” the GoFundMe page reads.
Thorpe’s sister Brynlee took to social media on Sunday with an update stating that he is alive but fighting for his life in the ICU.
Details about what led to the accident were not provided by officials.
