According to court documents, Gilbert Camacho, 24, is suspected of attempted rape of a child and attempted sodomy on a child.
An affidavit said Camacho was communicating with someone he believed to be the mother of a 5-year-old girl and an 8-year-old girl, that he arranged a time and place to sexually assault the children and wrote sexually explicit messages detailing his intentions.
However, a Lehi police officer was conducting an undercover chat operation, according to the report, and when Camacho arrived at a predetermined location, he was taken into custody and booked in the Utah County Jail. Camacho was also in possession of a firearm, and a vehicle search found candy, per the report.
Court documents said Camacho contended he was not going to sexually assault the children but was attempting to humiliate the mother, claiming he was a part of a vigilante group called the “Miami Avengers,” who “find individuals engaged in trying to meet children for sex and humiliating and assaulting them, then post the videos on social media.”
Camacho claimed he purchased the candy to give to the mother prior to humiliating her, the affidavit read. He also allegedly contended he was not capable of sexually assaulting the children in the expressed manner because he has no legs, among other disabilities.
Police arrested Camacho for attempted rape and attempted sodomy due to the messages he allegedly sent, and police requested he be held without bail.
A Sandy address is listed on Camacho’s booking information, but police also said the man is from New Jersey.
