Every year during the month of February, the city of Pleasant Grove becomes a little kinder. Choose Kindness Month has been a yearly tradition during February since its inception in 2018. The month is part of ‘Choose Kindness Pleasant Grove,’ which was born out of a partnership with the city, Jimmer Fredette and the Fredette Family Foundation and doTERRA.
Choose Kindness PG is a nonprofit organization that promotes a culture of kindness in the community. The organization works with the city, businesses, and every school in Pleasant Grove.
A kickoff event was held at the beginning of the month at which 100 students made lunches for people experiencing homelessness. Then, on February 11, a Galentines event was held, where 150 women and girls gathered to create bags of love and boxes for 100 women who have each experienced the loss of a stillborn baby. Also, flower bouquets for 100 women in the community were made to give away, according to organizer Sara Allen.
On February 25, Choose Kindness PG partnered with PG Cares for a “Kindness is a Superpower” event that the community was invited to attend. There were mental health resources, a speaker and a service project, which is part of a partnership with Stitching Hearts Worldwide. Participants helped with projects for refugees, people experiencing homelessness and children in need.
On the Choose Kindness PG Facebook page, kindness ideas for every day of the month are shared. Some of these are to write a love not to someone who is going through a difficult time, do an act of service for an elderly person, make peace with someone who has hurt you and make a hope rock and put it on the Murdock Canal Trail for others to find.
Choose Kindness Month will culminate on February 28 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Pleasant Grove Recreation Center, 547 S. Locust Ave., with a community service project. “All month long, we have been collecting items for comfort kits for children in the hospital in all of our schools in Pleasant Grove,” Allen said. “These items will be put together, and fleece blankets will be tied at our event with our whole community with the goal to create 200 comfort kits to bring light to children in the hospital.”
“Kindness is one of the simplest and most powerful ways we can lead. In Pleasant Grove, it’s part of our culture, how we treat one another, support our neighbors, and build lasting relationships. Choose Kindness Month is a reminder that even small acts can make a big difference in the community we share,” said Mayor Eric Jensen.
