Letter: In search of an unspoken answer
It appears there are some issues (and abortion is one of them), for which there is no “right or good” answer, but are simply a part of the troubling human predicament. So where might one go for counsel in dealing with the subject? If one turns to the Bible, it does not speak of abortion, but if you honestly ask yourself what might Jesus do or say — is that worth considering? Of course, no one really knows, but with some deep reflection, we might come close.
Think of the incident when the scribes and Pharisees tried to trap Jesus as to what he would say regarding the woman caught in adultery (John 8:3-11). The most memorable words of Jesus are “He who is without sin, let him cast the first stone” and “Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.” We know one thing (as to abortion), Jesus would first show much compassion and perhaps say something as “Neither do I condemn you, go and learn well from this experience.”
In the end, might it not be best to leave the decision to the woman, her conscience and her “god”? (If you think deeply enough you will realize that most of our social problems are symptoms).
