Letter: Antitrust legislation would hurt Utahns
I recently read that Utah is maneuvering to become the antitrust mecca and is the most active enforcer of its antitrust laws against tech companies, leading several national efforts. This is unsettling, considering everyone I know in Utah is worried about money right now. I know people talk about Congress being out of touch with their constituents. Still, I never imagined they would be so tone-deaf that they would try and pass an unnecessary bill that would cost the country billions of dollars while we teeter on the edge of a recession.
Unfortunately, that’s precisely what they’re doing with S. 2992, the American Innovation and Choice Online Act. A new report from the Committee to Unleash Prosperity put a multi-billion dollar price tag on this piece of legislation. Yes, you read that correctly. If passed, this legislation would cost taxpayers billions of dollars.
I can’t afford that, and neither can my fellow Utahns. Not with skyrocketing inflation driving up the price of my basic necessities. If the senate wants to pursue antitrust legislation, the price shouldn’t fall on the shoulders of hardworking Utahns. I have great respect and admiration for both of our senators, and I hope they will do all they can to push against harmful antitrust legislation.
