Letter: Hesitant about McMullin for Senate
1. Is Evan McMullin the Arlen Specter of our time? Specter was a Republican senator from Pennsylvania who could not get nominated for re-election. He decided to switch affiliations and caucus with Harry Reid’s party. That did not help him get re-nominated either.
Once Specter’s campaign hired Jerry Femina to work on its PR. Femina asked the staff, “What’s [Specter] for?” They replied, “He’s for winning.” Femina then asked, “What’s he against?” They said, “He’s against losing.”
Evan is following this pattern and wants to go compromise with Elizabeth Warren, Raphael Warnock, Bernie Sanders and others who don’t know how the economy works. Some of them even admire Castro-style bloody Socialism.
2. Having spent years in the CIA Evan’s actions there are classified. As a consequence, we don’t know if he was involved in secret prisons overseas, tubing intelligence in Iraq and Afghanistan or other such activities. Having a former boss vouch for how well he did his job without saying exactly what his job was is like having James Comey saying an agent did a good job without mentioning that work was performed on an unconstitutional search. I understand Evan cannot do anything about the classification and it was a necessary part of his job. But if you worked for an agency that committed blunders and what many people think are legal violations, you should not run for Senate because you cannot provide documentation stating your actions were above board.
