Letter: Equal weight should be given to comments

Nov 18, 2022

During the BYU Women’s Volleyball game vs Duke on August 26th 2022, national attention was drawn after Duke University Sophomore Rachel Richardson claimed that racial slurs were used against her by the BYU crowd. Multiple news stations such as USA Today and celebrities including Lebron James openly attacked BYU students and accused them of being racist and violent.  After an extensive investigation it was discovered all of the allegations were false. However the news stations were silent and refused to correct their prior statements.

Three weeks later, BYU played Oregon in football on the 17th of September 2022. During that game, Oregon crowd members yelled “F— the Mormons,” an obvious offensive slur that discriminated against these students and against their religious beliefs. Very little publicity was given to this incident and Oregon was never held responsible for their discriminatory actions. Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have a long history of receiving injustice and being discriminated against. This religious group deserves the same support and media attention as other cultures, religions, races and other minority groups.
