Letter: Reparations for Latter-day Saints?

By Staff | Apr 8, 2023

In recent weeks, I discovered the proposal of a new plan in San Francisco, California. This plan would involve a 5 million dollar payout to every eligible African American in San Francisco. Each eligible individual would receive elimination of personal debt and tax burdens, guarantee annual incomes for 250 years and would provide homes in San Francisco for only $1 per family. I fully support this proposed plan as it appropriately attempts to make restitution for the hardships faced by the African American community. Indemnifications ought to be given to groups of people whose ancestors were oppressed by the U.S. government. Another group or sect in this country’s history that has been wrongly treated by the U.S. government is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or often erroneously referred to as the Mormon Church. Going back 200 years, there has been documented persecution against the members of the LDS Church, in the forms of eviction, segregation, false imprisonment, murder and extermination orders. Consequently, just like the unprecedented proposal in San Francisco, I firmly believe that all living LDS members, likewise, be compensated for the oppressive actions of the U.S. government endured by their ancestors.
