Guest opinion: Utah Taxpayers Association supports Mayor Young for reelection

By Staff | Oct 15, 2025

For too long, cities and counties across Utah have treated taxpayers like an ATM. Property taxes, utility rates, fees and debt burdens keep climbing while families struggle with inflation. Government should be the last place adding to those costs.

That’s why Orem stands out–and why the Utah Taxpayers Association is proud to support Mayor Dave Young and the Orem Republican Team: LaNae Millet, David Spencer, and Crystal Muhlestein.

Under Mayor Young’s leadership, Orem has done something rare: delivered major projects without raising taxes. A new $37 million City Hall, a $30 million water tank, park upgrades, and citywide service improvements–all built responsibly, without asking taxpayers for more. That is fiscal discipline.

Contrast that with Orem’s past leadership. His opponent supported steep tax hikes and risky development schemes that left Orem taxpayers on the hook, including Midtown Village and the city’s involvement in UTOPIA. UTOPIA was so poorly planned that the State Legislature had to step in to prevent its total collapse, and it still burdens Orem taxpayers with over $50 million in debt.

Mayor Young has proven there’s a better way. Through careful planning, innovation, disciplined spending, and a commitment to putting taxpayers first, he and his team have shown a city can grow and thrive without saddling families with higher taxes and heavier bills.

This November, Orem voters face a clear choice: return to the days of tax hikes and risky deals, or keep moving forward responsibly with leadership that protects your wallet and puts taxpayers first.

For the sake of every Orem family working hard to make ends meet, the Utah Taxpayers Association proudly supports and endorses Mayor Dave Young, LaNae Millet, David Spencer, and Crystal Muhlestein.
