When I first moved back to Orem nine years ago, I thought that voting here was easy – all the candidates seemed to share a commitment to fairness, kindness, and the well-being of our community. It wasn’t until 2022 that I realized our city leadership did not align with the best interests of our entire community. I felt called to step up to help bring reason back.

My involvement started in 2022 when I attended a meeting about a new school district in Orem. I was curious. Should I support a new Orem School District? Would this new district be able to provide the same level of service for students with disabilities, like my son who was attending ATEC West? I quickly discovered it would have a poor impact on our students, teachers, and community. Soon after, I discovered a local group of concerned residents called Stronger Together and found that our ideas aligned.

After helping voters defeat Proposition 2 (the Orem-only School District) Stronger Together supported one incumbent and two new candidates for City Council in an effort to bring balance. Because I had disagreed with the city council and the Mayor’s agenda that included splitting from the Alpine School District, I again aligned with Stronger Together’s goals. Mayor Young’s incivility in public meetings has often been jarring. I am disappointed in the public rhetoric of our Mayor and his supporters. It is in stark contrast to Stronger Together’s candidates who embrace civility and teamwork.

Two years ago I marched in the Orem Days parade with now city-council member Jenn Gale. This year, I proudly marched with Angela Moulton. I now join Stronger Together in endorsing Karen McCandless for mayor, and Quinn Mecham, Doyle Mortimer, and Angela Moulton for city council. I donate to Stronger Together, distribute flyers, and advocate for them among my friends, family, and community. I don’t have a lot of free time or financial resources. Still, I do have a desire to serve our community and protect the vulnerable. Please participate in this non-partisan municipal election by learning about the candidates and casting your vote.
