I’ve lost count of how many Sunday dinners Mom has left mid-bite. Maybe it’s a message from someone who needs help or a city issue that can’t wait. It’s a running joke in our family that when her phone buzzes, we all look up and say, “Provo needs her again.”
That’s who she is. Mom always shows up when people need her. For our family. For her neighbors. For the city she loves.
In our home, hard work wasn’t something we talked about. It was something we saw every day. Mom was the first one up and the last one to call it a night. She went from cheering at games to helping with service projects to checking in on someone who was struggling. No matter how busy life got, she made sure family came first. Every Sunday, her door was open and dinner was on the table for everyone.
That same heart shows up in how she leads Provo. I’ve seen her meet with parents who want safer streets, residents concerned about taxes, and small business owners working hard to stay open. She listens carefully, treats everyone with respect, and works until things get better.
She believes in keeping taxes low, living within the city’s means, and making smart investments in things that matter — like roads, water, parks, and public safety. She’s proud that Provo continues to be ranked one of the best-run cities in America, but that’s not what drives her. What matters most to her is that families feel safe, neighborhoods stay strong, and people trust their city to do what’s right.
When I watch her lead, I see the same person I’ve always known. She’s steady under pressure, kind in disagreement, and never afraid to make a tough decision.
Growing up, I learned from her that leadership isn’t about being loud or getting credit. It’s about showing up, working hard, and putting others first. That’s what she’s done for our family and that’s what she’s done for Provo.
At the end of the day, she’s still Mom. The one who hosts Sunday dinner, cheers the loudest at our games, and reminds us to look out for others.
I’m proud of her not just for what she’s accomplished, but for how she’s done it — with faith, compassion, and grit. Provo is better because she never stops showing up.
