Letter: The wealthy are delaying history

By Staff | Mar 25, 2022

America is going down the same path as the ancient Roman democracy. The Roman wealthy class regularly delayed effort to solve people’s domestic problems, often by promoting foreign wars.

The American wealthy class have long used delaying tactics as well. Many of our original founding fathers did not want to end the slave trade, so they banned the Congress from ending it for at least 20 years. Even after emancipation, state Jim Crow laws delayed implementation of civil rights for another 100 years or more.

Today, America’s aristocracy are delaying economic reform by fighting against corporate and individual tax reform, unionization, debt relief, interest rate reform, anti-trust legislation, and pandemic-era family support measures.

On top of that, the 1% class is lobbying not only to authorize sales of military equipment and technology to Ukraine and NATO but perhaps even to get American boots on the ground.

The American people need to up the fight on behalf of domestic reform, or watch it sink under the weight of another European war.
