Letter: McDonald’s voice is needed in Congress

Sep 16, 2022

As a retired Utah pediatrician and an active advocate for the needs of children and families, I have been in frequent communication with Utah’s Congressional delegation for several years, by phone, email, zoom, and in-person at their local and DC offices.

My experience with these officials and their staffs is that they don’t understand that their role is to serve…not lead, but serve.

Darlene McDonald is the type of public servant that we need in government. While she is bright and intellectually gifted, she is humble enough to recognize and appreciate the knowledge and experience of others in the room. With an authentic curiosity she deeply listens to what others are saying…to fully understand…not the way politicians often listen to craft an excuse or to build a counter-argument. She is wise enough to seek out new perspectives and new data to challenge her own previous conclusions, and emotionally mature enough to change her decisions when the situation changes.

In sending Darlene to Washington, Utahns will finally have someone who cares enough about each of us to actively listen to our cares, to our fears, and to our dreams.  She will work to bring all of our voices to the decisions of congress.
