Letter: How to handle phones in schools

Nov 19, 2025

Since the creation of personal mobile devices the issue of cellphones in school has been a legitimate problem. With the recent crack-down on cellphones in schools in Utah, the question of where the line between too restricted and too lenient resides must be answered.

Phones in the hands of students are without a doubt a distraction. However, they also prove a valuable resource in connecting one with parents in case of emergencies, and connecting one with friends during lunchtimes and breaks. Thus, entirely banning the presence of cellphones in schools is unreasonable, but a method must be devised to regulate their use in classrooms.

A popular method involves the use of a phone pouch where students may store their phones for the duration of class and pick them up when class is over. To take this method one step further, the phone pouch could be used as a means of taking attendance, by numbering and assigning a pouch to each student. For students who do not have a phone, they could communicate this with their teacher and find a solution.

This method not only keeps the most serious distraction facing teens out of their hands, but it still grants them the freedom of having their devices on school property.
