Betty Spencer
1925 – 2022
Betty Spencer, 96, passed away March 30, 2022, in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was born July 12, 1925, in American Fork, Utah to Charles Gaisford and LaRue Spratley Gaisford.
Betty married Lawrence Hansen in 1943 and had a son, Larry. They later divorced. Betty married Ralph Spencer on December 9, 1949, in American Fork, Utah. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. They had three children; Brent, Alan, and Marsha. Together they provided a loving family environment until Ralph’s passing in 1985.
Betty attended American Fork High School, Utah Technical College, Brigham Young University, and the University of Utah. Betty was known for her writing. Those talents took her to many places and career paths, including working as a journalist and photographer for the Daily Herald and The Citizen, as well as providing Public Relations for the Utah State Developmental Center. She was an author of books and poetry and was a co-founder of Utah Pageant of the Arts. She traveled extensively with the National Federation of Presswomen, and later with her grandchildren to many countries.
Betty is survived by her children Larry J. (Karen) Hansen, Brent G. (Dixie) Spencer, Leesa Spencer, and Marsha (Jeff) Colegrove; 17 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren.
Betty is preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Spencer; her parents; her son Alan C. Spencer; siblings James Gaisford, Ruth Rothe Wightman, and Laura Ritcha.
Services for Betty Spencer will be held on Friday, April 8th at 1:00 PM at the American Fork 1st Ward, 381 South 300 East. A viewing will be held prior to the service from 10:45-12:45 PM.
