Anna Louine Brown Shields
Anna Louine Brown Shields, 95, left this mortal existence peacefully at her Provo home on Christmas Day from causes incident to age. Christmas was her favorite holiday; she held on to be part of it one last time with her family before moving on to the next celebration with her loved ones on the other side. In her final days, she was surrounded by her 9 loving children and many of her adoring 55 grandchildren and 95 great grandchildren.
Born July 19, 1927, in her parents’ home in St. Johns, Arizona to Joseph Albert Brown and Elda Whiting Brown, Louine was the fourth daughter and was followed by four brothers. Louine was proud of her pioneer heritage and St. Johns upbringing. She loved horses and working on her parents’ ranch.
Louine graduated as salutatorian from St. Johns High School in 1944. At age 17 she moved to Utah for college. In her second year she met her husband-to-be, Leland Grant “Gus” Shields, on a hike to whitewash the Y. She said Gus was friendly, handsome, and enthusiastic and they later met at different activities. Gus left on his mission to the New England States, while back at BYU Louine was voted the Dream Girl of Delta Phi. She graduated in 1948 at age 20 and moved to Tooele to teach English, which coincidentally was Gus’s hometown. Louine heard Gus give his sacrament meeting talk following his mission and was very impressed. They began a long-distance weekends-only courtship in earnest while Gus was completing his education and playing with and conducting his “Y’s Men” dance band at BYU and Louine was teaching at Tooele High. They married on June 8, 1949, in the Salt Lake Temple.
They raised their children in Utah County, UT and Maricopa County, AZ, Tooele, and finally Provo, where Gus taught Religion classes at BYU. Louine loyally supported all of Gus’s employment opportunities. Louine and Gus served a mission together in 1990 at BYU-Hawaii. Favorite memories include the many Whiting and Brown reunions at the Whiting Homestead in Arizona, trips to Israel, South America and Europe, a cross-country journey with all the children and spouses to pick Greg up from his mission, a Caribbean cruise, and many family gatherings for BYU football games. A prolific quilter, Louine ensured each one of her posterity received one of her heart-felt creations.
Louine served faithfully in many callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including Primary, Young Women, and Relief Society. She enjoyed serving in the Provo Temple. She loved the Savior and was unshaken in her testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Gus died on June 9, 1999, the day after their 50th wedding anniversary. As a widow, Louine became the matriarch and anchor for the entire family for the next 23 years.
Louine is survived by her nine children and their spouses: Scott (Brooke Millward), Jeff (Patricia Hawkins), Julie (Doug Ahlstrom), Alan (Rebecca Bushman), Eric (Heidi Brinkerhoff), Greg (DeAnn Hurst), Zach (Elizabeth Asplund), Lisa (Lynn Remund), and Kathy (Jeff Shumway). She found joy in this life in serving her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, siblings, daughter-in-law Lisa Kay Wright Shields, and grandson Grant Marcus Shields.
Funeral services will be assisted by Nelson Mortuary at the meetinghouse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 2400 North 1060 East, Provo, on Friday, December 30 at 3:00 p.m. with a viewing at the same location prior to the services at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be at Tooele City Cemetery, Saturday, December 31 at 11:00 a.m.
