George Shirl Johnson

Dec 27, 2022

When all is said and done, all we have left are our memories. In the noon hour on December 11, 2022, Dad finished the final chapter in his book of life and moved on to the great unknown.

George Shirl Johnson was born in Provo, Utah on October 24, 1931. Called George by friends and acquaintances, he will always be lovingly known to family members as Whif, Shirl, Uncle Pete, Georgie Bear, Dad, and the most recent title of Granddad.

Family meant the world to Dad; he would move heaven and earth to help someone in need. Whether you were building a house, needing a ride to the grocery store, or stuck in the middle of nowhere because your car broke down on the freeway, Dad/Uncle Pete was the person you called. No matter the distance he would be there for you. He was generous with his time and love and had a wonderful sense of humor. Dad’s last selfless act was donating his body to the University of Utah’s School of Medicine Body Donor Program. That’s one way to get into medical school.

Dad served in the Navy during the Korean War and was honored with his name being placed on the wall at the Veterans Park in Bountiful Utah.

He married the love of his life in August 1963. Together, they lived in Wyoming and Washington before settling in Utah. He is survived by his wife Ann, children Erik (Hayley), Elizabeth (John), Jane (Wendi), Amanda (Jody), Peter (Shawn) and 10 grandchildren.

Dad did not want a viewing or funeral; he wanted people to hold on to their memories of the good times and not focus on his death. To comply with his wishes, we are holding a Celebration of Life event on Friday December 30, 2022 from 11-1 at Aspenwood Manor, 289 W 500 N, Provo. Park at the Rec Center or on the street and come in the front door. Since Dad was not a fan of dressing up, casual attire is preferred.

Starting at $4.32/week.
