Carol Clark (Cook) (Cottam) Anderegg

Jan 7, 2022

The last strains of a lovely melody faded into silence early in the morning of December 31, 2021 when Carol Clark (Cook) (Cottam) Anderegg passed into the world of spirits. Carol was born in the home built by her pioneer great-grandfather on Center Street in Pleasant Grove, Utah on July 30, 1922, the eldest child of Hyrum Winfield Clark and Sarah Shipley Clark. Not only was she a beautiful child, but she was highly intelligent, witty and musically gifted

Carol began piano lessons at age 8, started playing solos in public at age 10, and at age 12, she performed at College Hall at BYU. During junior high school she played for the senior high school Boys’ Glee, and in high school played for other choruses. She played the piano for every assembly during her senior year. As a junior high school student, she served as the ward Jr. Sunday School pianist and would go on to serve in music callings in the church all of her life.

Carol was a graduate of Brigham Young University. She began her freshman year just after her 17th birthday and began teaching piano lessons at the same time. She ultimately taught music lessons for more than 55 years. After a leave of absence from school due to contracting polio at age 18, she went on to graduate with honors at the top of her class with a B.A. in music and a minor in English. When she returned to BYU, she continued to perform and to accompany various groups and soloists, at school, weddings, funerals and for special programs. Her musical education included studying for 19 years under world renowned concert pianist, Dr. Leo Podolsky. She always viewed her talent as a means of serving others and accompanied many fine artists (vocal and instrumental), as well as teaching and mentoring many students.

Of special pleasure to her was accompanying the Mendelssohn Male Chorus for 12 years and performing for 18 years as a member of The Forty Fingers Piano Quartet, which performed at BYU, at Women’s Conference, UVSC, Scera Shell amphitheater, the Provo Tabernacle and many other places. Additionally, Carol had a large piano studio in her home where many recitals, as well as performances by prominent musicians were held, including many from BYU’s music faculty.

Carol has always been active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and has held many callings besides nearly every music calling invented, including teaching in every organization and serving in the temple.

Carol was married to Cecil Munns Cook on December 1, 1949 in the Salt Lake Temple. They had a daughter and three sons. Cecil died in a car accident at the age of 48. She later married Von Bunker Cottam on March 7, 1986 and they enjoyed 12 years together before his death. They served in the Provo Temple, Von as executive secretary to the President and Carol at the prayer roll desk. They also performed musically, with Von playing the saw (yes, you read that right) and Carol accompanying him. At age 80 she married Henry Edward Anderegg, on June 20, 2003. They loved performing together, as Henry had a beautiful baritone solo voice which retained its quality until his death at age 90.

Carol was preceded in death by all three of her husbands, her sisters, Janice Clark and Joyce

Clark Walker, her brother, Dr. Hoover Winfield Clark, a granddaughter, Jessica Gates, and three great-granddaughters. She is survived by her brother, Roland Shipley Clark, and her four children, Laurel Cook Biddulph (Howard), Vaughn Clark Cook (Sandra), Nolan Willard Cook (Linda), and Carl McKay Cook. She is also survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren, making a progeny of 81!

The family wishes to thank the host of friends and professionals who loved and cared for Carol in her declining years, including especially the devoted staff at Legacy Village of Provo and the nurses and aides at Tender Care Hospice. Special mention must be made of friends Annette Burnett and Jean Edwards who unfailingly visited and cared for Mother every day over the last year.
