Mary Lou Whiting Leifson
Mary Lou Whiting Leifson was born on a late summer day, September 11, 1932 in Springville, Utah to loving parents Jesse and Helen Salisbury Whiting. Her dearest memories were of growing up in ‘the home on the hill’ with her four sisters Ann, Linda, Kathy and Janet. Her family was a circle of strength and love. As a child Mary Lou loved spending time with extended family and friends, especially her best friend Carol.
Mary Lou met Allen Leifson through their mutual friends Joan and Bill. They were married on October 12, 1951 in the Sale Lake temple. Mary Lou and Allen welcomed four children into their family. No job or title mattered more to Mary Lou than that of a mother. It was easy to see that her children were her highest priority. She took her role of mother and grandmother very seriously. She was a powerful force for good in their lives.
Mary Lou was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings throughout her life.
Mary Lou truly lived a life of quiet service. She provided many meals for friends and neighbors. When she was unable to deliver her meals she would box them up and Allen would make the rounds for her. She served many Sunday dinners to her dear friends. She gave unique, selfless service to her daughter Susan as she struggled with illness. Because of this example, it was an honor for her daughter and grandchildren to care for her. Even in her final days, her family often commented on the gentle gratitude and kindness that was so much a part of Mary Lou. Her sweet nature and dedicated love to all of us will be missed the most.
Mary Lou loved holidays, birthdays and any occasion that she could get together with her family and friends. Her 24th of July celebrations will go down in history and never be forgotten. We will miss her constant encouragement to “go get some more food.” She loved to feed people!
Nothing kept her from being with her family until dementia simply won out. And while the disease won in this life, Mary Lou had a testimony of the eternal family and the ultimate victory provided by her Savior. She found great comfort and peace in looking forward to reuniting with loved ones, including her husband Allen, daughter Susan, her parents, and her sisters.
Mary Lou is mother to four children: David (Tammy), Karen (Garth), Brian, Susan (deceased) (Alan).
She is grandmother to 8 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.
As a family, we express our unending love for her and look forward with faith to the day we are all together again. We are grateful for all she has done for us and will work hard to carry forward the courageous legacy she left to us.
