Claire Baker Hess

Claire Baker Hess died peacefully in her home surrounded by her family on Saturday, June 4th.

Claire was born on November 30, 1944 in Burley, Idaho, to Thurn J. and Ardath Hoggan Baker. She grew up in Moses Lake, Washington. After graduating from BYU (1963-1967) with a degree in English and History, she earned an M.Ed at the University of Arizona.

On August 21, 1967 she married Terry L. Hess in the Salt Lake Temple. Claire taught English at Springville High School, junior high English in Tucson, Arizona, and junior high remedial reading in Las Vegas.

After Terry graduated from law school in Tucson, they moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where they raised their children. They spent 21 happy years together before Terry’s death from cancer in 1989. In 1991 Claire and the children moved to Orem, Utah where they made many wonderful friends and memories.

Claire enjoyed genealogy and sharing family history stories. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She dedicated her time serving in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Claire is survived by her children: Julia (Michael) Hendron, of Mapleton; Clark Hess of Orem; Christine Chappell of Heber City; Jared (Amy) Hess of Orem; and Andrea (JR) Cook of Provo. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren, her sister Elizabeth Fielding of Orem; brother Garth (Katrina) Baker of Orem; and brothers Hugh (Lila) Baker, Leon (Lorraine) Baker and Reid (Lori) Baker of Moses Lake, Washington.

She was preceded in death by her husband, infant son Steven, and her parents.

A viewing will be held from 9:30 am – 10:30 am on Monday, June 13, 2022 at the LDS Chapel located at 1051 E 200 N in Orem, with a funeral service to follow at 11:00 am.
