Beverley Nalder
1930 – 2022
Beverley Nalder, our loving cousin and dear friend, passed away on March 12, 2022 of natural causes. She was 91 years old. Beverley was vital and active all of her life up until her very recent health challenges.
Beverley was born on August 14, 1930 in San Francisco, California to Claude W. and Mabel Martin Nalder. She was the middle child and was very close to her older brother, Martin, and her younger sister, Nadine. Her childhood was spent living in a “flat” near Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. As a child, Beverley enjoyed streetcar rides to school, roasting hotdogs on the beach, and visiting her grandparents in southern California. She especially loved her grandmother’s fresh-cooked breakfasts, which sparked Beverley’s lifelong interest in healthy cooking.
Later on, Beverley attended and graduated from Brigham Young University where she majored in Sociology. She furthered her education by pursuing a master’s degree at the University of Utah in Social Work. Provident and independent living were important principles to Beverley, and she knew the value of education. She loved learning new skills.
While Beverley was attending the University of Utah, she received a scholarship from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to do field work in support of unwed mothers and adoption services. She helped place many adopted babies throughout Utah. This work ignited her lifetime love and compassion for those who struggle and need help.
After finishing school, Beverley returned to California where she worked as a probation officer. She also helped single, expectant mothers to prepare for their child and to finish their education. Beverley then accepted a position at BYU in Counseling Services, a job she loved into retirement. She also taught Sociology courses at BYU.
As a young adult, Beverley met Ramona Morris, who became her devoted, life-long friend. Throughout the years, Beverley and Ramona shared a home in Orem, Utah, and they also loved to travel the world. They visited every continent, and cruising was their favorite form of travel. In 1975, they built a cabin in the Manti-LaSal mountains and created many fond and happy memories there with family and friends. They especially enjoyed traveling and spending time with their tight-knit group of friends they called the “Dollar Group.”
Beverley could start a conversation with anyone, and she was sincerely interested in understanding others and learning about their lives. Beverley had a charming smile, a radiant and beautiful face, and a quick, self-deprecating wit that made her company delightful! She had unwavering faith in God, which radiated from her spirit as she served her neighbors, friends, and family. She was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many different capacities. She also loved volunteering for many years at the Provo Missionary Training Center and as a hostess during the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.
Sadly, all of Beverley’s immediate family members preceded her in death. Beverley inherited her family’s assets, but true to her belief in lifting others up, she continued to live on her own budgeted salary, and donated her inheritance to scholarships for single mothers and other students from different countries. Beverley could not talk about these scholarships without shedding tears of joy for the blessings she felt she had received from this sacrifice. Remarkably, she has helped hundreds of students complete their college education through her endowed scholarships at multiple Church higher education institutions.
Beverley’s closest friend, Ramona, died of Alzheimer’s disease in 2018, and Beverley lovingly cared for Ramona throughout her illness. Beverley also cherished her loving family relationships, and found joy in family dinners, celebrations, their activities, and achievements. She was close to her cousins and their children and grandchildren, blessing their lives forever. Beverley also blessed the lives of the new friends she made while living at Jamestown Assisted Living the last few months of her life.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel located at 225 East 200 North in Orem, Utah. A viewing will be held before the funeral from 9:30-10:45 a.m. Beverley will be interred at the Orem City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to BYU’s Tender Mercies Scholarship Fund at: https://donate.churchofjesuschrist.org/donations/byu?funds=30123200&
