Ethel Keetch Hymas Hood

Nov 15, 2022

Ethel Keetch Hymas Hood, a long-time resident of Provo, Utah, passed away peacefully following a brief illness, on Nov. 14, 2022 in Mapleton Utah.

She was born Dec. 31, 1935, to Delbert Price and Theodocia Dalrymple Keetch Hymas in St. Charles, Bear Lake, Idaho, the 5th of seven children.

Ethel was an excellent student and created wonderful memories growing up on the family farm where she learned the value of hard work. She developed many useful skills and loved to sew, cook, crochet, sing and play the piano. She graduated from Fielding High in 1954 and left home to attend Ricks College where she met her future husband, Thomas Easton Hood, the first week of school. They were sealed in the Logan Temple Aug. 11, 1955, and shared over 66 years together before Thomas passed away in June of 2022.

While raising 9 children Ethel found time to volunteer and used her many talents to write songs for elementary school programs, sew clothes for her growing family, bake cookies, decorate cakes, bake bread, or fry scones while supporting her children in their activities. She always shared her homemade bread with neighbors and friends and later became known to her grandchildren as “the cinnamon roll grandma.”

After the youngest of her nine children started school, Ethel began working at Westridge Elementary as a teacher’s aide where she had a lasting impact on the lives of many with whom she worked for over 20 years. Her patient, fun loving personality was a perfect fit for the school, and she loved her time there.

Ethel served in many callings for the church to include Stake and Ward Relief Society Presidencies, Music leader for the Special Needs Primary, Activity Day Leader, and Teacher. She lived to serve others and exemplified Christlike love. She gave freely of her time, her talents and generously contributed to the mission fund for many missionaries over the years. She blessed the lives of all who knew her, and she will be greatly missed. Without doubt, she was warmly welcomed by those who waited for her to join them in the work on the other side of the veil.

Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, and six siblings: Albert (1929), Evan (1931), Veda (1934), David (1955) and Dorothy Bunnell (2017) She was also preceded by her great-granddaughter, Jenivee Clawson; granddaughter, Terra Parkinson and daughter-in-law, Christy Hood.

Family was very important to Ethel, and she cherished every one of her 38 grand-children and 49 great-grandchildren.

Ethel is survived by: Lorna Hood of Jackson, WI; Gwen Parkinson (Kirk) of Mapleton, UT; Jean Dean (David) of Woodland, UT; Kathryn Parsons (Ted) serving in the Peru Trujillo South Mission; LaDawn Bollinger (Steve) of SLC, UT; Jolene Nosack (Kris) of Orem, UT; Thomas Hood (Paige) of Orem, UT; James Hood (Janel) of St. George, UT; and David Hood of Mapleton, UT.
