Harold J Redd

Aug 8, 2023

Harold J Redd of Orem, Utah passed away on August 5, 2023 at the age of 82. Harold was born in Durango, Colorado on March 11, 1941, to Alma J and Vivian Redd of Blanding, Utah. He is the second child of 4 siblings, Patsy Shumway, Gretchen Bray (deceased) and Marta Brown, whom he loved very much. Harold grew up in the mountains of Southeastern Utah and Southwestern Colorado and worked with his father in sheep and cattle ranching.

Harold served a mission for the LDS church from 1960 to 1962 in Canada. It was on his mission that he met his beautiful wife and partner of nearly sixty years, Patricia Murray. They were married one year after returning home from his mission on September 7, 1963.

Harold was preceded in death by his son Christopher J Redd (1988) and his daughter Jill Redd Gurney (2016). He is survived by 5 children, Mary Catherine and Ed Sanford, Eric and Dena Redd, Brian Redd, Dan and Heather Redd, Matt and Sara Redd and his son-in-law Dee and Juli Gurney. They are also survived by 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

As a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Harold held many callings throughout his life. While he enjoyed serving others in any capacity, some of his greatest rewards were while serving as Bishop to both his local ward and of a BYU married student ward. Harold loved to serve those around him and gave his time and resources generously. He was an example to his family and all those that knew him.

Harold graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in Zoology in 1965. He went on to work for BYU as an administrator for the next 32 years, retiring in 1998. After retirement Harold and Pat served a Mission in Thessaloniki, Greece from 2000 to 2002 where they blessed the lives of many people. One of their most memorable adventures was a trip they took following the missionary journal of Harold’s grandfather, Wayne Hardison Redd, through the Southern States Mission. They spent several months in Alabama, Georgia, and Florida retracing Wayne’s footsteps and meeting the descendants of those Elder Redd baptized.

Harold’s funeral will be held August 12th at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 700 East 445 South, Orem, Utah. Viewing will start at 9:30 am to 10:30 am with the funeral services beginning at 11:00 am.
