Roberta Lee Muir Nielsen

Aug 29, 2023

1929 – 2023

Roberta Lee Muir Nielsen, our amazing mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, matriarch, and friend, peacefully passed to the other side of the veil on Sunday, August 27, 2023 surrounded by those who loved her. She was 93 years old.

Roberta was born on October 31, 1929 in Beaver, Utah to Ernest Alfred Muir and Leonora Jane Taylor. She was the second child of six; her siblings were Norman (Corinne), Russell (Jackie), Fae (Dale Harris), Nile (Sally, Sandie), and Allie (Harvey Mecham). She spent her childhood in a happy home in Beaver where she would graduate from Beaver High School and later attend Brigham Young University. She was married and sealed to the love of her life, Evan Christian Nielsen, on May 25th, 1949 in the Manti, Utah Temple. They had three children: Brenda Lee, Tamara Kaye, and Evan Bradford. Roberta was a prime example of a working mother who was devoted to family, faith, and career- all of which she excelled at. She started her career as a legal secretary in Beaver and later Evan and Roberta moved their family to Provo where she worked as an executive secretary for a prominent law firm. She transferred to Brigham Young University working as an executive secretary in the Continuing Education Department (CES), and eventually became the executive secretary and assistant to the dean of the Marriott School of Management.

Roberta was known and recognized as the perfect homemaker, always keeping a pristine house, bringing family and friends together with the best home cooked meals, and making the most delicious chocolates every Christmas for all of her friends and family. She loved going out to lunch with friends and family and getting her hair and nails done. She had a passion for BYU sports, especially for football and basketball and she could give anyone who asked the latest sports updates.

Roberta spent most of her life serving her community where she was always in the service of those in need: preparing meals, driving to and from appointments, visiting the sick, and doing anything anyone would ask if she could. Evan said his favorite thing about Roberta was that “She has a genuine concern for other people. She is forever doing the little things for others that most people don’t notice or care about.” Everyone was her best friend.

Roberta loved the Lord, serving three missions over her life: the Texas Houston South Mission and as hosts at the Conference Center in Salt Lake City with Evan. After Evan passed away, Roberta was called to serve in the Washington D.C. Temple as the executive secretary to the temple president. Roberta was originally called to serve for one year but remained after being asked to serve for three.

Aside from the Savior and her family, her greatest joy was serving in the temple. Every week she looked forward to the time she spent in the House of the Lord doing His work.

Roberta is preceded in death by her daughter Brenda Lee Nielsen (David) Logie, North Granby, CT (d. 2021) and is survived by Tamara Kaye Nielsen (Owen) Johnson, St. George, UT; and Evan Bradford Nielsen, Pleasant Grove, UT; as well as her 9 grandchildren: Tricia Logie (Lee) Bowen, Herriman, UT; Jilene Logie Ray, Lehi, UT; Brian (Kristy) Logie, Granby, CT; Kara Logie (Christian) Joyner, Winchester, VA; Daniel (Aftin) Eicher, serving in the U.S. Embassy in Nepal; Matthew (Amber) Nielsen, American Fork, UT; Brett (Jennifer) Nielsen, Lehi, UT; Ashley Nielsen (Jordan) Keith, Pleasant Grove, UT; and Eric (Megan) Nielsen, Lehi, UT. Roberta is also survived by 36 great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved individually and who had personal, loving relationships with her. She is preceded in death by her brothers Norman, Russel, and Nile, as well as her husband Evan Christian Nielsen (d. 2003), and her great-granddaughter Aliza Joyner (d. 2014) all of whom she loved dearly and who were no doubt waiting to greet her with open arms and happy tears on the other side of the veil.
