Philip E. Allsen passed away on January 13, 2023, of natural causes. Before his passing, he had the opportunity to visit with many friends and family members. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to be together one last time.

Philip was born in Milford, Utah, on June 10, 1932, to John Allsen and Alverta (Ericksen) Allsen. He spent his early years in Utah and then grew up in Los Angeles, California, during his junior and senior high school years. He graduated from George Washington High School in Los Angeles in 1950, where he was valedictorian and excelled in athletics and participated in student government.

He received an athletic and academic scholarship to start his undergraduate career. He played basketball and graduated with his B.S. degree with academic honors from Ricks College, Rexburg, Idaho, in 1954.

It was during his junior year in college that his life changed for the good when he met Pat Randall on Halloween eve in 1952. As a result of this encounter they began to date and they were engaged on December 15, 1953, and were married in the Idaho Falls Temple on June 4, 1954.

Because of the influence of a good wife, he has been an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had the opportunity to serve in many church callings such as Elder’s Quorum President, Bishopric Counselor, High Council, and others.

Family has always been important to Philip. He and Pat were fortunate to have two children, John and Kathy. They have eight grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Philip was employed as Athletic Director for the City of Gardena, California, while waiting for his US Navy Officers Candidate class to start in March 1955. After receiving his commission he was assigned to the Naval School of Pre-flight in Pensacola, Florida, where he taught and also coached a basketball team that was ranked in the top of service teams.

After serving in the Navy, he enrolled at Brigham Young University and completed his master’s degree in 1960. He was then employed at Ricks College to teach and coach. His teams were successful and won several championships.

Philip took a leave of absence and entered the University of Utah to complete a doctor’s degree which was awarded in 1965. After returning to Ricks College for one year, he was offered a position at Brigham Young University in the Department of Exercise Science in 1966.

For the next 50 plus years, he taught and conducted research. He served as the chair for 200 master and doctoral students. He has delivered presentations at national and international events. He published 182 articles and book chapters as well as 6 textbooks.

He has received many accolades and awards. The most significant recognitions being selected Teacher of the Year over 7 times by the Brigham Young University Alumni Association. He also received the Karl E. Maser Award for Teaching Excellence and the Ricks College Distinguished Award for Professional Accomplishments. He has been selected to the National Strength and Conditioning Hall of Fame and the U.S. Army Sergeant Majors Hall of Fame.

Funeral services for Philip Allsen will be held at the Nelson Family Funeral Home, 4780 North University Avenue, Provo Utah on Friday, January 20, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. A viewing for family and friends will be held at 10:00 a.m. prior to funeral services. Internment will be held at Eastlawn Cemetary, Provo, Utah. Family and friends are invited to celebrate the lives of Pat and Phil Allsen at Brick Oven from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. following the services.
