Norma Hansen Elton

Mar 1, 2023

1928 – 2023

Norma Hansen Elton, daughter of Roy and Roanna Hansen, was born March 21, 1928 in Mammoth, Utah, and passed away peacefully on February 19, 2023, at the age of 94 in Pocatello, Idaho. She was the 6th of 7 children and grew up in Mammoth and Eureka, Utah. She attended schools in Eureka and graduated from Tintic High School where she played the trombone in the marching band, was on the cheerleading squad, and active in the glee club. Dr. Oborn employed her in his dental office while she was in high school and she was a ticket cashier at the movie theater.

Norma met and married Bill Elton after he arrived home from serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He enrolled in the University of Utah ROTC program and, upon graduation, was commissioned a First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. That started their 25 years of exciting adventures, with their 3 children, to many exotic locations around the world. Included were Tripoli, Libya; Washington, D.C.; Midwest City and Burns Flats, Oklahoma. Spokane, Washington and Bellville, Illinois were also home to the family

In Tripoli, Norma learned how to golf while playing on oiled sand fairways, joined an International Women’s Club, bartered in an Arab souk and was the chauffeur for an Arab bridal party.

Bill retired in 1971 and they moved to Provo to build their permanent home. She filled her time working in retail sales, eventually transitioning into real estate. She always had time for golf, with 7 hole-in-ones to her credit and retired her annual golf season pass at the age of 89. Another joy was attending BYU sporting events, especially football. She blessed the lives of all her family with her handmade quilts.

Norma was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in ward organizations in addition to stake and student ward callings. Bill and Norma served in the Tampa Bay Florida Mission in 1995-96. Her life exemplified her strong faith and love for her Savior, Jesus Christ.

Norma is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Bill Elton; parents; 4 brothers, Raymond, Paul, Monte and Doyle Hansen; 2 sisters, LaVerne and Jewel; and grandson, Daniel Johnson.

Norma’s surviving family includes her 3 children; Karen (Richard) Johnson, Kathie (Brian) Hickenlooper, and William Calvin (Michelle) Elton; 13 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-granddaughters.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the Rock Canyon Ward Chapel, 3050 Mojave Lane, Provo, Utah. The family will receive friends from 9:30-10:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment, Eastlawn Memorial Hills Cemetery, 4800 North 650 East, Provo, Utah.
