Scott Bertelsen

Mar 4, 2023

Our sweet dad and grandpa, Erwin Scott Bertelsen, passed away February 28, 2023, in Springville, Utah, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Springville, Utah, on March 6, 1929, to Erwin Bertelsen and Selma Olsen Bertelsen.

He married Carole Finch on September 16, 1950. The marriage was later solemnized in the Provo Utah Temple on January 14, 1977. Dad cherished Mom. They loved to watch BYU sports, go to dinner and the movies every Friday night, and travel together. Their example and love for each other is something we will always remember.

Scott was an avid BYU fan and kept everyone in the family updated on all the latest BYU sports news. Whether it was an update on the latest recruit, transfers, or to let us know he had placed a call to the BYU athletic director to give him free, unsolicited advice on how to run the football team, his family was the first to know.

Scott had a strong work ethic that he learned at a very young age. He started selling stuff out of his wagon at age three and didn’t stop working hard until the end. His career as an accountant was proof of his hard work. He started sweeping floors at Geneva Steel, and when he retired at age 59, he was the general manager over all the accounting departments there. He kept an immaculate lawn and garden, and his family is going to miss his tomatoes and cut up cucumbers that he would deliver in a bag already peeled, seeded, and sliced. Scott loved his four children, their spouses, and his grandchildren immensely. His family was everything to him and that was evident in how he treated us all. He loved everyone equally and unconditionally. He never missed a grandkid’s sporting event ever. He loved to spoil his grandkids with $20 bills for “being a good kid,” extra treats, and said yes to everything they ever wanted. He would show up in the middle of the night to rock a crying grandchild, sometimes they just wanted grandpa. He made regular phone calls to check up on everyone, would run errands or anything else that was needed, picked up kids from school, and helped with projects. He was always there for every member of his family, no matter what. He was a great example of service to everyone around him family or not.

He is survived by his four children, Brad (Darlene) Bertelsen, Peg (Rand) Johnson, Rick (Lori) Bertelsen, Kirk (Gena) Bertelsen; his loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his sweetheart of 71 years, Carole Bertelsen; his parents; three sisters and one brother.
