Janet Calder

Mar 9, 2023

Janet Calder was born December 11, 1940, in Provo, Utah. She died from vascular dementia at the age of 82 on March 4, 2023, in Provo. She was the daughter of J. Hamilton and Myrtle (Iverson) Calder and sister to James H. (Jim) Calder. She was deeply loved by her family.

After graduating from Provo High School in 1959, Janet enrolled in the Executive Assistant program in the Business Education department at BYU. During her undergraduate years, she made many friends and developed a fine mind and a balanced outlook on life. She was a member of the Phi Chi Theta national business association and treasurer of the Val Norn social unit.

Following graduation from BYU in 1963 Janet embarked on her first trip to Europe. Upon her return, she began working full-time for Dean Antone K. Romney of BYU’s College of Education. Concurrently she earned her teaching certificate, after which she taught for one year at Salt Lake’s Olympus High school.

In 1971, newly appointed BYU President Dallin H. Oaks was searching for a secretary. At that time, she was working at the University of Utah and had no plans to go back to Provo but thrilled by the prospects of returning to her alma mater, Janet began a remarkable tenure in the BYU President’s Office in August 1971.

In 1980, President Oaks was appointed to the Utah Supreme Court, and for the next three years, Janet worked for W. Rolfe Kerr who was a BYU Vice President. She then returned to the President’s office and worked as a secretary for President Jeffrey R. Holland, President Rex E. Lee, and President Merrill J. Bateman, and concluded her career with President Cecil O. Samuelson, Jr.

Janet’s greatest strengths were her love for people, her sympathetic nature, her endless patience and perseverance, and her penchant for detail. In addition to her secretarial duties, she was compassionate when dealing with distraught parents, always remained calm when confronted by the angriest of students, and had the ability to listen intently to talkative callers. Loyal, selfless, sensitive, and devoted, Janet’s contribution to BYU was immeasurable. Rumor was, that if someone wanted a specific project accomplished at BYU, they should contact Janet for assistance.

An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Janet served as a primary teacher, a young women’s advisor, a secretary in ward and stake callings, and as a meetinghouse librarian. Janet transcribed patriarchal blessings for the Oak Hills Stake Patriarchs for over twenty years. She also loved to sing in the Oak Hills Sixth Ward choir.

Even as her cognitive abilities diminished, Janet continued to be a kind, sweet, and gentle person. She was a wonderful Aunt and a second mother to Jim and Ann’s children. Special thanks to Courtyard at Jamestown assisted living and to A Plus Home Care & Hospice for their care and compassion for Janet during her season of increased struggles.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her brother Jim and his wife Ann Christopherson Calder, and their six children, Jay (Lara Bisgaard) Calder, Christine (Clark) Gilbert, Catherine (Tony) Horsley, Mark (Shannon Seal) Calder, Kimberly (Ryan) Simmons, and Scott (Marcelle Crockett) Calder, and 35 grandnieces and grandnephews.
