Daryl John Tichy
Daryl John Tichy, 76, passed away peacefully on November 7, 2023, at his home in Orem. Daryl was born in East Cleveland, Ohio on May 29, 1947, to Lydia Parobek and John Tichy. Daryl attended Brigham Young University, where he joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and met his sweetheart, Judy Nicholas of Olney, Illinois. They were married on October 8, 1970.
After graduation, Daryl worked on the administrative staff at BYU, leaving in 2006 to assume the role of Vice President of Research and Development for a biomedical company that he co-founded. Daryl was the holder of at least 17 patents and was a 2010 Utah Genius Award recipient.
Daryl served in the Utah National Guard as a Czech and Slovak linguist and attained the rank of Captain. Daryl was also a talented painter. His works can be found in collections throughout the country. His paintings twice received the Best of Show award at the Utah State Fair.
Daryl enjoyed seeing the world with Judy. They enjoyed traveling the backroads of America, visiting their children and grandchildren, taking care of their property on Prince Edward Island in Canada and the family cabin in Wasatch County, and experiencing new places and cultures. Daryl particularly enjoyed visiting his ancestral homeland of Slovakia.
A wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, Daryl took a keen interest in his children’s and grandchildren’s lives and avidly attended their various activities. If it was important to them, it was important to him. He also enjoyed serving in various church callings and assignments. He and Judy were among the first church-service missionary couples called to serve in the BYU-Pathway program.
The family expresses thanks to Dr. Peter Duros, the dedicated caregivers from Bristol Hospice, Jay and Trevor, and his long-time personal aide Christina of Senior Partners. The children and grandchildren also acknowledge Judy’s sacrifice and dedication as Daryl’s primary caregiver.
Daryl is survived by Judy, his wife of 53 years, his six children, 12 grandchildren, his sister Darlene (Warren Ellison), and many beloved friends, neighbors, and co-workers. A memorial service will be held Thursday, November 16, 2023, at 3:00 pm at 225 East 200 North, Orem. The interment will be in the Orem City Cemetery.
