Olive Maxine Hansen
1924 – 2023
Olive Maxine Hansen passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 16, 2023 in her hundredth year of life. She was born on July 12, 1924 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Frank Joseph Mullett and Olive Cora Aveson. Her family moved to Provo when her father opened Mullett Jewelry on Center Street. Frank and Olive created a loving home for their two daughters, Maxine and Marian, filled with fresh flowers, fun games, silly songs, and laughter.
Maxine attended Provo High School where she met her high school sweetheart, Howard Hoover. She later attended Brigham Young University where she studied bookkeeping. Maxine and Howard were married in Kansas City, Kansas where Howard was serving in the Air Force. They eventually made their home in Edgemont where they raised their four children, Pam, Teri, Kim, and Shannon. In 1960, Howard was tragically killed while rafting the Colorado River. Maxine cared for her four children as a single mother before meeting Don Hansen, who first noticed her when he coached her son Kim’s baseball team. Don and Maxine were married in Provo and later joyfully welcomed their youngest daughter, Mary.
Maxine faithfully attended The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and encouraged her children to develop their own testimonies of Jesus Christ. She served in both the Primary and Relief Society and greeted each calling with a happy heart. She was a member of Dekatos and loved her Bridge games with friends and family. Her exceptional culinary talents will be fondly remembered and dearly missed. Her children agreed that of all the meals their mom prepared, their favorite by far was her roast beef with Yorkshire pudding, as well as the divinity candy she made every year at Christmastime.
A true adventurer, Maxine spent every summer enjoying Lake Powell with her children and grandchildren–water skiing, camping, and exploring the desert, and winters were spent skiing at Timp Haven with friends and family. She and Don shared a passion for traveling and enjoyed trips to Europe, Hawaii, Fiji, and Australia. Her adventurous spirit lives on in the many generations after her, leaving behind a legacy of appreciation for nature and the outdoors.
Beloved by all who knew her, Maxine will be remembered for never being without her red lipstick. She was deeply devoted to her family and is survived by her five children, Pam Hoover Robert (Jeff), Teri Hoover Robert, Kim Hoover (Jean), Shannon Hoover Anderson (Jerry), Mary Hansen Mallory (Rick), 32 grandchildren, 96 great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2023 at 11:00 at 4056 N. Timpview Dr., Provo. There will not be a viewing prior to services.
