Howard R Francis

Howard R Francis, born on the 26th of August, 1929 in Lake Shore, Utah, was a humble man of high integrity. Over his lifetime of 94 years, he distinguished himself as a dedicated servant, loyal friend, and loving family man. Howard was a proud disciple of Jesus Christ and an esteemed member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. His fervor for the teachings of Christ was evident in his numerous religious involvements which included serving as a Missionary to Uruguay, Bishop, Branch President, Mission President, MTC Medical Director, General Church Missionary Health Committee, Elders Quorum President, and an Awesome Home Teacher.

Howard married the love of his life, Deanne Tanner on January 12, 1961 and they have shared their lives together ever since. Their relationship was the foundation for his life and of primary importance to him.

Professionally, Howard was a respected obstetrician and gynecologist at the Provo Ob-Gyn Clinic in Provo, Utah, which he founded in 1963. His loyalty to his profession was evident in his unparalleled service spanning over 30 years before he retired in 1991, having delivered over 15,000 babies. His dedication to his community was demonstrated through his tireless work as the Chairman of the Utah County Cancer Society, Director of the Utah County Volunteer Medical Care Clinic, and Chief of Ob-Gyn at Utah Valley Hospital. Howard’s love for life extended to his hobbies which included hunting, fishing, boating, ranching, horseback riding, camping, traveling, gardening, and cane making. He was also recognized for his academic excellence as a Student Body President at Spanish Fork High School and a member of BYU Honor Society. He received his Doctor of Medicine from Cornell University and completed his residency at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City.

Howard is survived by his loving family which includes his wife Deanne Tanner Francis, his children; Brett (Jonell) Francis, Shannon (Steven) Clegg, Morgan (Heather) Francis, Brooke (Ed) Rowe, Nicole (Will) Kelsch and his siblings; JoAnn Phillips, Dixie Page, Larry Francis, and Ron Francis. He also survived by 29 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Ronald and Elizabeth Francis, his son Dallan (Cristine) Francis, and his brother Vaughn Francis. The viewing will take place on Friday, 9 Feb 2024 at 6:00 p.m. at the Nelson Family Mortuary at 4780 North University Avenue in Provo. A second viewing will be held at the Oak Hills 9th meetinghouse at 1960 North 1500 East in Provo on Saturday, 10 Feb 2024 at 9:30 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. The graveside service will take place at 1:00 p.m. at Eastlawn Memorial Hills Cemetery.
